As a pro-Israel American, I was shocked that such a vehemently anti-Israel politician would have such a large backing for the chairman of a major political party.
Congressman Keith Ellison, who has announced his candidacy for chairman of the Democratic National Committee, has a dangerous record in Congress of opposing America’s greatest ally, Israel.
His anti-Israel activity is evident in 2009, when he voted against Rep. Joe Walsh’s (R-IL) legislation to protect Israel from discrimination at the United Nations. In 2011, he voted against H.R. 1006, which recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people and of Israel. Additionally, he authored and pushed a letter to President Obama disingenuously asking Israel to lessen their security surrounding Gaza, an area controlled by the violent terrorist group Hamas, which aims to “obliterate Israel.” Furthermore, he spoke at an event for the anti-Israel organization “The US Campaign To End the Israel Occupation,” which supports boycotts of Israeli goods and academics.
It is integral that the chairman of the Democratic Party supports the Middle East’s most democratic, socially liberal, and free nation. Israel works to secure the rights of all her people, including immigrants, members of the LGBTQ community, and women. Congressman Ellison’s record against this beacon of democracy in a region of turmoil should disqualify him from serving as DNC chair. I urge Democrats from all areas of the country to reject his candidacy.
